Virtual Sherrill Cemetery Page

The Sherrill Cemetery at Sherrill's Ford, N.C. where graves go back to the 1700s however, Adam Sherrill, the Pioneer, is not buried here. To get to the cemetery, turn onto Island Point Road off of Sherrill's Ford Road across from the elementary school; go about 1/2 mile and turn right on Camden Point Road.

Plaque at the entrance to the cemetery denoting the rededication in 1997.

A very old headstone at the Sherrill Cemetery: "L S 12 July 1816" Most headstones from this period are not readable.

A mounting rock in the woods near the Sherrill Cemetery is not a headstone. See the year "1795" chiseled into the stone. This stone, used for mounting a horse, was pointed out to me by cemetery caretaker, Joe Robertson, on my visit there in March 2001.

The oldest known, readable, tombstone of one of my grandfathers: Jacob Sherrill, grandson of Adam, the Pioneer, at the Moore Graveyard near Hickory, N.C. born: March 20 1748, died: March 8 1831

Jacob's wife, Sarah (Sally) Massey Sherrill, also at the Moore Graveyard. born: Sept. 9 1754, died: Nov. 10 1849

Babel Sherrill Graveyard in Caldwell County. This graveyard is actually in the front yard of a private home on Lake Hickory. Babel Sherrill, son of Jacob, is buried here (tallest stone, born: Sept. 3 1778, died: Jan. 31 1851) along side of his wife Elizabeth Connelly Sherrill (2nd largest stone, born: Dec. 29 1778, died: Sept. 24 1824). There are five heastones at this location. I suspect that two of them are the graves of one of Babel's sons, and his wife; I don't know which one. The small one at the left is the grave of an unnamed infant.

Rehobeth United Methodist Church Cemetery is located just south of Sherrill's Ford. Many Sherrills are buried here including Elisha Sherrill, great-grandson of Adam, grandson of Capt. William Sherrill (born: Oct. 27 1794, died: Oct. 27 1870); and his wife Elizabeth B. Milligan Sherrill (born: Nov. 26 1811, died: Nov 20 1870).
